This is the largest wash-up of purple sail jellyfish (velella) I have ever seen. It extends for the complete length of the Oregon coastline and it is a stinking rotten mess. Enough to keep people off the beach. In the area shown it was up to a foot deep and several yards wide. The holes are footprints. Perhaps in the long run the extra nutrients will benefit the intertidal zone, but right now it's looks like something is out of balance. BACK TO PHOTO |
