These are Common Murres, sometime referred to as penguins of the north. Their feet are located so far back on the body that they must walk upright penguin style. They also occupy a similar ecological niche in their environment. They can swim underwater as far as 600 feet down. The larger birds are cormorants. The amount of screechy noise is amazing, not to mention the odor if you are downwind. BACK TO PHOTO |
