The top photo does a pretty good job of making the subject the most prominent element. Also notice the "rule of thirds" composition (explained in tip 2). The bottom photo, of a whale, is anything but whale like. I made an OK web image out of it because I could tightly crop a high resolution scan. But the photo would make a very poor print.
